If you think that there are only a few ways to avail lowest fare tickets, then you are partially right, not wholly. Why? A close examination of what the prospective passengers do before booking flight tickets would make it very clear. If we divide that behavior into a number of steps which are generally taken in the process, you will find at that every step the person has a number of options to choose from. Let us have a check on these.

a)    Pre-search Step: Before you begin to make searches for the flights and fares, it is important to ask yourself whether you are flexible with the days and times of travel or not.

Another important point to note is whether you are having frequent flyer membership of any airline or agency. How many points does it have and would you like to use these?

Would you like to have a direct flight or even a connecting one would do?

Would you be willing to book cheap flights for a secondary airport?

Is there any specific airline you would like to fly with? Or, will be any airline which offers the best services?

Who would you be flying with? Any person with special requirements? Whether that person has special requirement or condition to fly?

Do check your email subscriptions as well since can be a pre-existing offer on flight which might be of good use to you.

b)   Search Step: During this step, the search is not limited only to the one platform (agency or airline website or mobile app) but extends to a number of sites (including social media and deals websites). The aim is to find the best possible fare, if other considerations are not important.

At first, you would like to go with that airline whose frequent flyer membership you are holding as the aim would be to use or even add the miles.

Thereafter, the consideration would be to look for the fares to alternative airport, if there exists any such airport for that city.

Searching part is the most time consuming, so it is always a good idea to have a few names in check list where the fares have to be checked ahead of others.

Making an offline call to flight agency is another good idea to find if there is any deal available with them. Many a times, they have the non-published fares which are not available to public at large but only to the special client who approach for flight booking on call. This shall not be ignored since prices can be really cheap.

c)    During the course of booking: Make use of the coupon or promo codes which you find during the ticket booking process or the frequent flyer miles which can help in reducing the cost of ticket.

d)   After-booking: Many a times, the agencies or airlines would send you an email requesting for leaving a feedback on their site or on some social media channel. The companies might provide some special offer for the next flight as an incentive to write the review. This is another good way of reducing the cost of flight in future.
