Carrying Smart Bags In Airplanes

What is a Smart bag?

Let us first understand what a smart bag is. It is not theusual cabin or check-in baggage which is normally carried in the airplanes. Rather, it is a bag with a battery. IATA defines a smart bag as “a luggage that contains a battery used to power itself or to recharge other devices”. So, basically it is the in-built battery which comes along with the smart bag which makes it ‘smart’. Due to this inherent powering capability, a smart bag can be used for many other features that are associated with power.

Important Features of Smart Bags

·         Tracking - It can be tracked using GPS, GPRS, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

·         Charging Devices-Due to inbuilt power of power-bank and presence of ports, it is possible to charge a number of other devices as well.

·         In-built scales-Some laptops have inbuilt scales which shows how much does the bag weigh. This is very important for flights as there are strict baggage weight regulations.

·         RFID-blocking pockets- As tech has advanced, so has its misuse in the form of hacking. Most of these bags come with special pockets which have the RFID blocking mechanism in these. If you keep the cards and mobiles in these pockets, these will remain safe from RFID based tracking attempts and data theft.

Can These Be Carried on Board?

Smart bags with removable batteries are allowed to be carried as cabin baggage, not in check-in. Smart bags whose batteries could not be removed are not allowed to be carried in planes. So, these are practically useless when you are travelling in a flight.

If you are being checked at gate for carrying a smart bag, you shall be able to remove the Lithium-ion battery and carry it separately in the flight. Since all smart bags are made with Lithium-ion battery, it is pertinent to incorporate it as a removable part of the bag.

Another point to be noted is that Lithium Ion batteries of more than 100Wh rating are not allowed on planes. So, the bag which has these batteries must have these below this rating level.

In a nutshell, if you have to take a smart bag on flight, please make sure that it has removable batteries, otherwise, the airline might not allow it.
