Airline Policy Determinants on Carriage of Zam Zam Water

Zam Zam water believed to be a sacred water by the Muslims from around the world. People who go to Saudi Arabia would want to bring this water back home since it is considered to be pious. Different airline companies have different policies in this respect. Before examining these policies let us first have an overview about the history of this water.

The water is taken from a well which is located in Masjid-al-Haram in Mecca. The well is believed to have originated thousands of years ago when the son of Ibrahim was left with his mother Hajar in the desert. To this day, this tradition of considering the water of this well as pious continues, and the devote Muslims take this water back to their native places, all over the world. The carriage of this water is facilitated by packaging it in bottles of different volumes and airlines also allow it, either within the check-in baggage allowances or in addition to it.

The airlines have different policies on its carriage. These policies revolve around some of the points.

·         Packaging: The airlines might want these to be packed by reputable companies. This is important because the packaging has to be strong enough to withstand the air pressure in the plane. Therefore, the normal bottles with this water are not allowed in check-in baggage hold.

·         Check-in baggage: The airlines might also want this to be carried in check-in baggage, either as a part of the check-in free allowance or in addition to the check-in baggage.

·         Visa and Itinerary conditions: Some airlines even impose the condition of allowing these only on those passengers who hold a valid Hajj or Umrah visa.

·         Location specific requirements: Airlines even want to check that the place of origin of the water bottles. So, these must be from Jeddah or Mecca only for some of the carriers.

·         Quantity restrictions: Even as the airlines would allow carriage of water, these might put restriction of the volume of water and number of bottles. Generally, up to 5 litres of Zam Zam water is allowed for free, however, some might allow upto 10 litres.

The policies of the airlines keep on changing in this respect. So, it is important to check for the details of this policy on the airline before making airline reservations.
