Artificial Intelligence in Aviation to Prevent Crashes, Save Lives?

There are a number of benefits of deploying artificial intelligence based systems in the aviation sector. These benefits can be derived in all aspects of aviation operations, from crew management to revenue managements, from predictive health assessment to operational management and much more. One of the areas where it is expected to be particularly beneficial is that of maintaining the safety record. It can be used in a significant manner to reduce instances of airplane crashes.

Airplane crashes happen due to a number of reasons. Some of the most important reasons for these crashes are-

  • Pilot error- due to a wrong decision
  • ATC negligence
  • Defects in manufacturing
  • Deficient training
  • Weather condition
  • Insufficient Maintenance
  • Instrumentation issues

The list is not exhaustive and there could be many more reasons. However, the above mentioned are the major ones. Let us see where the AI can help in reducing these instances.

The pilots do undergo rigorous training before getting to fly a plane. Any error on the part of pilot can prove to be fatal, if it goes beyond a certain point. The use of automated tools and systems till now has not been able to reduce the instances of pilot error to zero. This is also due to the fact that in many instances the manual control overrides the automated one. With the use of AI, it is believed that these instances can be reduced to almost negligible as proven systems can be developed. The reasons for flawed judgments can be reduced by introduction of AI systems. Further, if these are proven to be fool-proof, it is better to let these override the manual control in many respects which are currently by over-ruled by manual control.

For the weather conditions, it can be used for real time determination of the safety of weather for flight operation, including the take-off and landing. This will be a more advanced system that what are prevalent at present in that this will help in taking very timely decisions. AI systems will be factoring in huge number of atmospheric conditions and phenomenon to determine best flight course in real-time which will prevent airplanes moving inadvertently into the dangerous weather.

With respect to issues of instrumentation and maintenance, the use of predictive and additive technologies with the use of sensors, can point out the need for timely repair and maintenance, preventing the last minute flight delays or rescheduling of flights.
