Be Prepared for the Next Gen Aviation

Aviation sector is one of the foremost sectors in the realms of innovation. The present focus of innovation is centered on reducing the harmful impact which aviation poses to the environment, improved navigation and guidance, increased digitization and path-breaking designs. From the perspective of the passengers, they will be seeing totally newly designed airplanes on the tarmacs. The interiors will also undergo a change with better experience. And, while boarding the plane, there will be no element of guilt that you are contributing the environmental degradation. Let us now know what you are about to board on in the coming decade or so.

a)      H2 Powered Planes

At present, the airlines make use aviation turbine fuel (ATF) which is actually a grade of kerosene. It contributes to a good extent to the greenhouse gases (GHGs). There is a good leap made in technological advancement of the hydrogen-based fuel to be used in passenger aircrafts. This is now becoming a viable option and expected to deliver the first hydrogen-powered airplane by 2035. Once this is accomplished, it will be a sea change.

b)      Design Change to be more fuel efficient

The design of the wing is also being worked upon to make this more efficient. A blended wing design which combines the wings with the fuselage is being worked up to make these more efficient in using fuel.

c)       Two levels of cabin seating

There is increasing demand for the lowest fare class to be more comfortable from the passengers. On the other hand, the airlines would like to see more economy class passengers in the planes. Both these requirements are met to a good extent, if the design of cabin is made like that of a double decker bus.

d)      Air Taxis

Electrically and Lithium powered small airplanes for flying on short haul routes are being experimented with. These could provide the alternative to the road-based transportation system. Companies are investing in this technology and some like Volocopter even conducted the test flights as early as in 2017. This will give a big impetus to the air-based transportation in same way as road-based one.

e)      Flying at supersonic speed

Gone are the days when flying at supersonic speed was fraught with safety concerns. The only past example of these planes that were flown at these high speeds were that of Concords. These were retired in 2003 which marked the end of an era.

f)       Use of Virtual and Augmented Reality for Better In-flight Experiences

Researchers are making use of more virtual and augmented reality techniques for improving the cabin experiences and making it more immersive. British Airways and Alaska Airlines have already tried VR headsets in the first class cabin of flights. Further innovations are to bring more gaming options, reducing cabin noise, and others.
